UConn Competes at Annual Southern Tournament

This past November, the UConn Huskies traveled to Clemson, South Carolina to compete in the 8th Annual Southern Comfort Lacrosse Tournament. The tournament, held at Clemson University, hosted teams from some of the most competitive leagues on the East Coast. Teams this year included Tulane, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, University of South Carolina, Clemson University, UConn, and others.  Teams played one full day of competitive tournament-style games, followed by a full day of single elimination bracket-style playoffs.

UConn went 3-0 during the first day of play, defeating Tulane, Georgie Tech, and USC, and earning a #1 seed going into the playoffs. The Huskies then defeated Elon in the first round of playoffs, 11-4. The second round ended in an overtime victory for UConn over Virginia Tech, 9-7. Freshman Lindsay Scopetski scored the tying goal at the end of regulation to send UConn into overtime, where they took control of the game. The Huskies faced Division II team Queen State in the finals and lost 11-7.

The tournament provided the Huskies with a great opportunity to prepare for Spring League play. UConn hopes to return to the Southern Comfort Tournament next fall or possibly compete at another reputable tournament.

Generous Friends and Family Make Fundraiser a Success

The UConn Huskies would like to thank the friends and family of team members that helped sponsor our team this fall. Thanks to your generous donations our team was able to travel to Clemson, South Carolina to compete in an elite tournament. The Huskies were also able to order new team apparel for the Spring season.

As a club sport that does not receive full financial support from the University, funding is a constant source of concern for our team. In order to play at a competitive level, the team needs funds. We pay for travel costs, team apparel, equipment, and other necessities. Without generous donations from our friends and family, our team would not be where it is today.

Once again, we would like to thank the friends of family of our new players for their generous donations to our team. We really appreciate any and all help we receive from our fans!

NEWLL Receives Automatic Bid for National Tournament
The New England Woman's Lacrosse League (NEWLL) has recently reclaimed its automatic qualifying big for the WDIA National Tournament in May. An automatic qualifying bid allows the winner of the league tournament to claim an automatic spot in the National Tournament.

NEWLL had earned an automatic qualifying bid when the league was first established seven years ago. However, in order to maintain the bid, the league must have eight registered teams, each playing at least six league games. Last year, NEWLL only had seven registered teams and consequently lost the automatic bid. With strong efforts from the NEWLL League President, the automatic bid has been returned to the league due to the addition of two new teams: Brown University and University of New Hampshire. NEWLL now consists of eight teams: Brandeis University, Boston College, Brown University, Dartmouth College, United States Coast Guard Academy, University of Connecticut, University of Maine, and University of New Hampshire.

UConn won the NEWLL League Tournament last April, but because of league technicalities regarding league requirements the Huskies were denied the automatic bid to Nationals. UConn hopes to have another strong showing in the league tournament this year in order to earn a well deserved trip to Nationals.
