What is a club sport? Is it different from a varsity sport?

Club sport teams are student-run organizations that are partially funded by the University and partially funded by the students involved. They fall somewhere in between the varsity level and the iintramural level. Club sports travel and compete just like regular teams, except the commitment level of a club sport is much less than that of a varsity sport. Club sports usually practice one-three times a week and have games on the weekends. For more information visit the UConn Club Sports homepage http://www.clubsports.uconn.edu/.

How is a club sport run?

Club sports are both a club and a team. We do travel and play lacrosse, but we also require the duties of a club or organization. We are responsible for fundraising money and for meeting with our club sports advisor and the Club Sports Council. There are officers that organize any "off-the field" requirements, as well as team captains that take care any "on-the-field" issues.

When does the Women's Club Lacrosse team play?

Although our season technically begins in Spring, we do play fall ball with other teams in the area. We will usually play 8-10 games in the fall depending on the weather and other teams' schedules. Our Spring season is much more competitive. We start indoor in late February and move outdoors as soon as the weather allows. We will usually play 10-12 games throughout March and April including the league tournament in late April. We practice on Mondays and Thursdays from 4-6 PM in the fall and the spring, weather depending.

Where does the team play?

The team uses two facilities on the UConn campus. We practice on the Mansfield Depot Field on UConn's Depot Campus. Our games are usually on the Sherman Turf Field behind the recreational facility. Our website lists directions to both fields, and our schedule will indicate where our team is playing each game.

We do travel for away games. Usually half our games will be home and the other half will be away at other colleges and universities. We travel mostly within the New England area.

How competitive is Women's Club Lacrosse?

Our team is becoming increasingly more competitive with each passing year. In Spring of 2007 we won our league championship and are hoping to reclaim that title this year. Check out our archives page for more information on how our team has competed in past years.

Are there try outs? When are they?

We do hold tryouts every year in the fall. Although our real season begins in the Spring semester, poor weather does not allow for adequate try-outs. Therefore, our try-outs are held annually in September . If you are interested in trying out, you should either contact the team (ucclax@gmail.com) or attend the Fall Involvement Fair held early in September in the Student Union.

What kind of commitment should I expect to give to this team?
We practice twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays from 4-6 PM. Practice is mandatory. We excuse players if they have class during that time, but we encourage girls to try and schedule their courses around practice. We expect everyone to be able to attend all games. Games are almost always on the weekends. Half of our league games will be away, which involves travel time for the team.

We also travel for one overnight tournament in the fall. We try not to miss class times for these trips, but sometimes it is inevitable. This year we traveled to Clemson, South Carolina for a two-day tournament. Two years ago we traveled to Maryland for a tournament as well.

There is also a financial commitment to the team. Each member will pay team dues. These dues go towards team apparel, equipment, and travel costs. The dues can range anywhere from $100 to $200. These dues are for the entire year.

What other teams do you play?

US Lacrosse is broken up into several different regional leagues. We compete in the New England Woman's Lacrosse League (NEWLL). We play the teams in our league: Dartmouth College, Brown University, US Coast Guard Academy, Boston College, University of New Hampshire, University of Vermont, and Brandeis University. There are also several independent teams (not league-affiliated) that we will compete against if we can fit games into our schedule. These teams include Yale University, Holy Cross, and others. During our fall ball season we will schedule games against teams from other leagues such as University of Rhode Island, Army, Fordham University, Northeastern University, and others.
